The Leadership Has Left the Dock - Will it Return?

This week expressed a theme of leadership.  I have not had time to let the lessons sink in, but here are ingredients:

1.  My principal resigned.  She wrote a two line email to the entire district, dropped her keys on the desk and without a word to the teachers she works with everyday, skeedattled out the door.  I hope it slapped her on the fanny.

2.  The principal at the large high school came over to say she would take more direct leadership of our school.  She came prepared with an immediate plan to help us deal with the rest of the year and a long range plan for the years to come.  She brought with her a team of competent people.

3.  On Saturday, I ran a successful cheerleading clinic for first through eighth graders.  We raised over a grand and the events of the day were well organized.  My cheerleaders' parents were organized and administrated the clinic, I prepared the girls and kept the schdule moving forward.  A well executed team effort.

4.  Piper asked me, "What do I need to do to become the cheerleading captain?"  This is an on-going conversation as she can't quite absorb it all in one sitting.

5.  The cheerleaders have been asked by the school to take on the pep assembly reponsibilities.  And while I roll my eyes at the added responsibility, the offer is a symbolic one.  Two years ago the cheerleaders could not have handled such a job - and most certainly would not have been asked to take it on.  The girls recognize this as an honor and are excited.  Sigh.

6.  Chip is always asking questions about leadership in his own life.

7.  I am reading Death Comes for the Archbishop by Willa Cather.  So far it is excellent and I am expecting it to speak to the leadership issue.

8.  The two movies I watched this week (Astronaut Farmer and Evan Almighty) oddly shared thematic similarities.  Two men doing strange things for which they were mocked - they only varied in their level of enthusiasm about their given projects.

Ponder and Mull.  I welcome your comments.

To My F-f-freezing F-f-friends in the F-f-far East

Did you know that when the temp drops to -13 you can open your front door and the hot air escaping from the opening will release steam like a dryer vent?  Dude.  This post is dedicated to my friends suffering through the winter in western China.  Friends, I feel you.  I cannot relate to the coal smoke blackened sky, but everytime our Durango coal-fired train billows smoke into the sky, I think of you two.  We are praying for you.  Thank you for becoming faithful bloggers so we can keep up with your lives.  We are so proud of you!  I want to try your funky, far-east ice cream flavors...as soon as it warms up a bit.

More Than A Resolution!

Okay ladies, I know I am not the only one trying to drop a few pound at the onset of 2008.  My motivation is that, come June, I want to wear a pretty dress to Steve and Amy's wedding, not the potato sack currently hanging in my closet.  I have signed on to Jillian Michael's online support gimick so that I can track my progress, stay motivated (whatever!) and be told what workout to complete each day.  I have been doing an easy yoga workout four or five times a week while I wait for Jillian's videos to arrive by mail.  Yoga is really awesome.  This is the first time in my life that I have attempted workout videos...and so far I am enjoying them.  My schedule just doesn't allow me to get to the gym... so this is the winter time option.  It's pretty cool so far.   I am surprised.  I have 18 pound to lose - which is awesome since I would have guessed it was closer to 30.  I'll confess it took me a while to get on the scale.  Jillian, my new best friend, also told me that my original goal was not realistic.  Good to know.  I certainly don't shed the excess easily, so the closer I am to a healthy goal the better.  Good luck to all of you in the same boat.  I want to shed my winter coat before the thaw!  Here's to broccoli!  Chocolate cake be damned!
